What does church liturgy mean?

Liturgy is the ordered, shared work of worship: the prayers, readings, responses, hymns, sacraments and actions through which the congregation participates together. It provides a faithful shape for worship, but it is not identical in every denomination, occasion or congregation.

Methodist and Presbyterian services may share familiar elements while using different authorised forms and sequences. Always choose the outline for the correct denomination and occasion. A Sunday morning service, Holy Communion, baptism, funeral or wedding may require a different order.

Intercessions bring the needs of church and world before God. Offering and announcements should support rather than interrupt worship. The blessing and closing hymn send the congregation into service.

How to lead liturgy clearly

• Arrive early and open every passage, hymn and response before worship.
• Speak slowly enough for the congregation to join responses.
• Give a clear cue when people should stand, sit, sing or respond.

• Do not improvise official sacramental wording without the minister’s direction.
